Mr.
Octave J. DuTemple
Mr.
Octave J. DuTemple is a native of Hubbell, Michigan. Mr. DuTemple
joined Argonne National Laboratories as a Chemical Engineer
performing research on plutonium and uranium after receiving
a bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a master’s degree
in 1949, both in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Tech.
In 1955 he earned an MBA from Northwestern University. While
at Michigan Tech he was active with Delta Sigma Phi, ROTC,
band, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and the Varsity Club.
Mr. DuTemple was appointed Executive Director of the American
Nuclear Society (ANS) in 1958, a position he held for 32 years.
Local sections of the society grew from 3 to 59 during his
tenure. He initiated the Society’s prestigious monthly
magazine Nuclear News and played a key role in the international
transfer of peaceful nuclear technology. Upon his retirement
in 1990, he received the Samuel B. Shapiro Award for outstanding
service and management. In 1992 the ANS Headquarters in LaGrange
Park, Illinois were dedicated in his name. Mr. DuTemple is
a member of ANS, AIChE, ACS, NSPE and ASEE. He was awarded
the Silver Jubilee Honorary Fellowship Award (1985) and is
the third Honorary Life Member of the Chinese Nuclear Society
of Beijing, China. He was awarded the Board of Control Silver
Medal (1986) for Distinguished Professional Service, is a
Director of the A.E. Seaman Mineralogical Museum, a member
of the Second Century Society and the President’s Club
of Michigan Tech. |
