PAWS Safety Coordinators

Each engineering team will assign one person to be the team’s Safety Coordinator. The safety coordinator will take a special interest in hazards identification/evaluation and in the safe operation of the team’s laboratory experiment.

Specific responsibilities of the Safety Coordinator:
The Safety Coordinator will lead the development of the Job Safety Assessment (JSA) for the experiment.
They will educate the other engineering team members of the safety concerns and safe procedures for the assigned experiment.
The safety coordinator will also participate in the Safety Committee.
Each person in the team will serve as Safety Coordinator once per semester.

Collectively, all Safety Coordinators will form the Safety Committee.

Safety Committee

The Safety Committee will consist of:
one or two Safety Committee Leaders;
two or three Safety Meeting Presenters;
a number of Lab Inspectors;
and one or two PAWS evaluators.

The roles and responsibilities of each are defined below.

Safety Committee Leader – The Safety Committee Leader will coordinate all activities of the safety committee and ensure that all safety committee responsibilities are fulfilled. Each laboratory section will have a safety committee leader. The two leaders will work together to coordinate a single safety meeting for both sections at the scheduled time.

Safety Meeting Presenter – The Safety Meeting Presenter will be responsible for preparing and delivering the presentation and facilitating class discussion at the Safety Meeting. This responsibility should be assigned to dynamic, charismatic individuals who will engage the class in stimulating and productive discussion at the safety meeting.
PAWS Tabulator – The PAWS tabulator will collect, review, and tabulate any new PAWS reports, follow up on any open PAWS reports from previous experiment cycles, and help maintain the PAWS tracking web site.

Lab Inspector – The Lab Inspector is responsible for filling out the Safety Inspection Checklist (SIC) while inspecting the UO Lab areas, experiments, and safety equipment before and after each scheduled day of laboratory work. Inspectors will also initial and date the tag on each safety shower/eye wash fountain and fire extinguisher after a successful inspection or test. Equipment failing a test must be reported to a lab supervisor immediately and a PAWS form is to be filled out.

Safety Meeting

A Safety Meeting will be scheduled toward the end of each experiment cycle. A safety meeting consists of the following agenda:
1. A review, discussion, and resolution of PAWS Forms that were submitted, including PAWS forms that are still open from prior experiment cycles.
2. A review and discussion of the laboratory inspections as reported on the SIC.
3. Discussion of any safety incidents that occurred in the lab.
4. Presentation on an appropriate or assigned safety related topic.
5. General Discussion.

All students are required to attend all safety meetings and must sign a document attesting to their presence.
